periodontics

Researchers from the U.S. have reported that genetically engineered mice that produced a certain protein were resistant to radiation-induced oral mucositis, a painful oral ulceration. They hope that their findings will contribute to the development of a new drug that patients can apply topically to mouth sores or that prevents mucositis altogether.

Microbes from the human mouth are telling Oak Ridge National Laboratory scientists something about periodontitis and more after they cracked the genetic code of bacteria linked to the condition.

Alexandria, Va., USA – In a study titled “Prevalence of Periodontis in Adults in the United States: 2009 and 2010,” lead author Paul Eke, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimates the prevalence, severity and extent of periodontitis in the adult U.S population using data from the 2009 and 2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle. The study is published in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR).

Listerine, a leading provider of oral health solutions, has recently introduced its new product: Advanced Defence Sensitive. The latter is a new mouthwash that features a recently patented technology for treating tooth sensitivity.

According to a new study, nearly 50% of adults in the US over the age of 30 are suffering from periodontal disease. The study was carried out by a team of researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Several other findings of importance included the fact that certain groups were affected more than the others. These groups included smokers, Mexican-Americans, people who lived in poor conditions, and individuals with less than a high school education. More about the study appeared online on Aug. 30 in the Journal of Dental Research.

In a recent study, researchers have been able to develop a new controlled-release capsule that can be inserted between the teeth and the attached gingival to reduce bacterial growth and reduce inflammation. The new capsule contains a special type of protein that appears to have anti-inflammatory effects. The protein also promotes regeneration in gum tissues. The device has been evaluated recently on laboratory mice and the results are encouraging.

According to a new study, people with dental plaque may be at higher risk of death because of cancer. The study was carried out by a team from Sweden, and its results are highlighted in the 11th of June issue of the BMJ Open journal.

A study titled "Periodontal Therapy Reduces Hospitalizations and Medical Care Costs in Diabetics" was discussed at the 41st Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR). The event was held along with the 36th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.

I was a dentist for 25 years, during which time I saw countless teeth, some were healthy, others weren’t, and acres of periodontal tissue, some healthy, some not. The one thing all of my patients had in common was that they were all alive!

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced recently that it will provide $2 million as a grant to be used for a collaborative research project at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. The research will discuss the action of Candida albicans in periodontal diseases.
