Academy for Sports Dentistry presents 31st Annual Symposium: "Enhancing the Vision of Sports Dentistry" The Academy for Sports Dentistry is an ADA CERP recognized provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. This course is designed as an overview of the major areas that the team dentist should be responsible for. The basic dental sections on dental readiness for the athlete to start and optimally compete, the ability to rapidly recognize and treat orofacial trauma, and the ability to prevent injuries with excellent mouth protection are the basic sections for any team dentist course. In addition the course will feature two special hands-on workshops on mouthguard fabrication and intraoral suturing to enhance the didactic portion of the presentation. There will also be a section on the legal responsibilities of the team dentist at a variety of levels of competition to answer any questions that one might have about taking on the role of team dentist. Knowledge of drugs to use for acute situations and the possible drug side effects help keep our athletes ready for competition. Dental injuries can be classified into those requiring immediate attention (within 5 minutes), urgent attention (within 6 hours) and less urgent attention (within 12 hours). It is a race against the clock. No injury is this more true for than the tooth avulsion. Immediate replantation gives these teeth the best possible long-term prognosis. Delay in tooth replantation most certainly will lead to the eventual loss of the tooth.
