PORTLAND, OR, March 17, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Is your New Years Resolution to reduce all those sweets? Well, Portland cosmetic dentist, Dr. Sue Wendling, recommends xylitol as an alternative to sugar! She says Xylitol is good for preventing cavities; because it has a different chemical structure than sugar- it actually starves the bacteria that can cause cavities.
Dental professionals in Germany are urging caution against assuming that stevia, a widely known sugar substitute, is safer to teeth than granulated sugar. The dentists say that this assumption is not supported by adequate scientific evidence. A number of dental professionals in the US have encouraged the use of sugarfree chewing gum to fight tooth decay. It is recommended that high risk patients use this gum during the day to reduce the incidence of decay. In previous studies researchers had identified Streptococcus mutans as a primary causative agent of early childhood caries (EEC) cavities. Now researchers report that Scardovia wiggsiae, a new bacterial species associated with teeth, may also be a primary participant in the pathogeneses of the disease. The article describing this research is highlighted in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. |
