There are two primary treatment approaches for cleft lip and cleft palate. They were examined in a study published in the Craniofacial Journal for both Cleft Lip and Palate; these procedures are orthodontic space closure and prosthetic replacement, primarily with resin-bonded bridges. Twenty seven Clift Lip and palate adult patients participated in the study that took place in the Netherlands. And the evaluation of the treatment was counting basically on aesthetics and mandibular function. Dentists should take into account, while deciding the treatment, several factors including the skeletal pattern, tooth size and arch length, and size and color of adjacent teeth. They often prefer the Prosthetic replacement to help them in maintain symmetry when incisors are missing or spaced apart and to ensure adequate space for the tongue. The Orthodontic space closure is considered to be the less costly procedure that can be performed before the patient’s growing up end. Unlike prosthetic replacement it does not need adjacent healthy teeth.A survey was made to assess the rate of the aesthetics of the two procedures, through questioning patients and professionals. They found that there is no apparent aesthetic difference between the two procedures performed. But, the evaluation of the procedures showed that prosthetic replacements resulted in significantly more impairment of the jaw. |
