In the early years of my general dentistry practice I recall that on one occasion after twisting over in an awkward position while sitting and treating a maxillary posterior tooth in a reclined patient I was unable to sit up without severe pain in my lower back. In fact, I could not get up and had difficulty continuing work the rest of the day.

 

According to a recent study, individuals heavily consuming alcohol are 3 times more likely to have severe gum disease, unlike occasional drinkers. More about the study appear in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. The study also indicated that the combination of alcoholism and smoking can result in higher risk for severe gum disease.

 

The findings of a recent study to be published in European Radiology, 2011, and abstracted in PubMed prior to print (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21805369), authors C Gaudino and colleagues from the Department of Neuroradiology, Heidelberg, Germany, suggest that MRI may be much better at visualizing periodontal dental structures than multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) or CBCT.
