MANCHESTER, UK: A woman from Manchester has sued her dentist for failing to diagnose her oral cancer. The 58-year-old was referred to the dentist for regular check-ups after she had developed a white patch on her gingiva. When he eventually referred her to the hospital after several appointments, the doctors diagnosed her with “seriously invasive cancer”.

 

According to new research, individuals with dental abnormalities may face a higher risk of developing cancer. The study was conducted by a team from the University of Pittsburgh and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The results were published online on Nov. 20 in the Journal of Dental Research ahead of print.

 

According to a new study, people with dental plaque may be at higher risk of death because of cancer. The study was carried out by a team from Sweden, and its results are highlighted in the 11th of June issue of the BMJ Open journal.

 

In May of 2010 an article was published in Acta Oncol ( Acta Oncol. 2010 May;49(4):447-53) that described the results of a case control study of thyroid cancer and dental x-rays. Subsequently this article, which is based on original research by A Memon, et al, has been extensively publicized via multiple Web reviews. For example, there are over seven plus pages of Web ‘spin-off’ articles meant for the lay public on Google alone related to the study.

 

Plasticity is the ability of an organism or cell to change its phenotype in response to changes in the environment or microenvironment. It looks like the loss of structure function – embryonic like tissue and epithelial to mesenchymal transition, in addition to epostastic, but they also have functional plasticity, “ they can look like vasculature, and the list goes on and on”.
